The unified app for the UPI-based payments known as BHIM has crossed over 3 million downloads in just five days since the launch with more than 5000,000 transactions done since then. Amitabh Kant, the CEO of Niti Aayog put up the numbers in a tweet. He also confirmed that the app will be arriving on iOS in about ten days time and even multilingual versions of it will be introduced in the same time span. Currently, the app is available only on Android and supports Hindi and English.
On December 30, the BHIM app was launched by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and it stands for Bharat Interface for Money and it has been named BHIM after Babasaheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar. Just days after the launch the app has already started topping the Google play Store charts in India. It has been developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). It is indeed a welcome news that the government us bringing in the iOS version.
The BHIM app allows payments through the United Payments Interface(UPI), which makes sure that the money is credited or debited straight to the user’s bank account. The app also allows transfers via IFSC code and MMID for all those who don’t have UPI on their bank accounts. The UPI payments require only a Virtual Payee Address (VPA) and the user need not have to share his bank details, etc.
The app BHIM binds the user’s device and the mobile number requiring the user to set up a pin to login into the app every time. Another pin called the UPI Pin is required to conduct the transactions on BHIM.
The BHIM app has been provided with three factors of authentication; one it will bind the device and the mobile number, second a login pin is required, and finally a separate authentication pin is needed. Even regenerating the UPI Pin requires access to a user’s debit card.
The government has in fact extended the UPI payments integration to the USSD platform wherein the user can dial *99# using their feature phone or just any smartphone and easily conduct a UPI-based transaction without always needing to rely on the internet. Also, mobile wallet Paytm is actually supporting UPI in order to let the users load the wallet. UPI is a direct bank-to-bank payment getaway, even though the BHIM app has a daily limit of Rs 20,000.
It has been told that BHIM app will also be supporting Aadhaar-based payment in the future.
